Professor mATHEUS LUTES

Matheus Lutes is the head instructor at Royal Jiu-Jitsu and one of the most accomplished Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes of his generation. A black belt under the legendary Marcelo Garcia, Matheus is known for his technical precision, calm demeanor, and ability to develop talent at all levels. With a competition record that includes gold at the IBJJF World Championships, multiple Pan-American titles, and appearances on international stages like KASAI Pro and Polaris Invitational, Matheus brings world-class experience to every class.


But what truly defines Matheus as a teacher is his commitment to mentorship and community. For him, Jiu-Jitsu isn’t just about winning medals—it’s about developing confidence, discipline, and resilience in every student who steps on the mat. Whether you’re a beginner learning your first technique or an advanced athlete preparing for competition, Matheus leads with patience, structure, and a deep respect for the art.

Professor tHOMAS CAO

Professor Thomas is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Luis Gustavo Costa of the Renzo Gracie Academy and brings more than 15 years of martial arts experience to Royal Jiu-Jitsu Queens. With a foundation in Muay Thai and MMA, and a professional background in the fitness industry, Thomas brings a well-rounded, functional approach to every class he teaches.


A lifelong New Yorker and native of Queens, Thomas has spent the last four years training daily under Professor Matheus Lutes at the Royal Jiu-Jitsu headquarters, refining his style and adopting the principles that define the Royal system. His teaching blends technical rigor with real-world application, helping students of all backgrounds grow in strength, skill, and self-confidence.


Thomas is passionate about giving back to his community by building a culture of accountability, respect, and progress here in his home borough. He’s committed to helping students unlock their potential, one class, one roll, one lesson at a time.
